New Delhi, 27 August (Language)
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said on Thursday that more
than 17 lakh candidates have downloaded the admit cards for the JEE and NEET
examinations and it is clear that the students want the exam in any case. Huh.
The Union Education Minister's remarks come at a time when there is a demand by
some sections to postpone the NEET and JEE Mains examinations in the wake of
increasing cases of COVID-19.
Nishank said, "National
Examination Agency (NTA) officials told me that more than 7 lakh candidates
have downloaded the admit card for JEE Mains Examination while more than 10
lakh candidates have downloaded the admit card for the NEET exam.
This makes it clear that the
students want the exam to be conducted in any case. He said that out of about
25 lakh candidates for medical and engineering exams, 17 lakh have downloaded
the admit card. He said, "We have received emails from students and
parents in favor of conducting the examination as they have been preparing for
this examination for two-three years.
The Supreme Court is of the view
that the entire academic session cannot be wasted. The examination has been
finalized after postponing it twice. The Union Education Minister's remarks came a
day after Chief Ministers of seven non-BJP ruled states stated the need to file
a review petition to reconsider the Supreme Court's decision in the matter.
The Joint Entrance Examination
(Main) or JEE for Engineering will be between 1 to 6 September while the
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-Graduate) is planned to be held on
13 September. 15.97 lakh students have registered for NEET. About 8.58 lakh
students had registered for JEE Main. These examinations have already been
postponed twice due to Coronavirus.
The JEE Mains exam was originally
scheduled to be held on April 7-11 but it was postponed to July 18-23. The NEET
exam was originally scheduled to be held on May 3 but was postponed to July 26.
These examinations have been postponed once again for September. This issue has
been the subject of intense public discussion for the last few months and
different views are coming out regarding the conduct of these examinations.
If one class is in favor of
conducting the examination, then the opposition party and one class workers
demand that the examination should be postponed further in view of the
epidemic. Recently, the Supreme Court rejected the petition for postponement of
JEE Mains and NEET examinations and said that the previous academic year of the
students cannot be wasted.
Congress and some opposition
parties have demanded that the examination should be postponed in view of the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic and the flood situation in some states. At
the same time, the government has clarified that the examination will be
conducted according to the prescribed schedule, taking appropriate precautions.
On Thursday, Odisha Chief Minister
Naveen Patnaik had a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and urged him to cancel the NEET and JEE Mains exams in view of the flood
situation in COVID-19 and some states. Patnaik also wrote a letter to Nishank
in this regard.
At the same time, 150 academics had
written a letter to the Prime Minister that delaying the medical and
engineering entrance exam would be a mess with the future of the students. Amid
increasing demand for postponement of both examinations due to the increasing
number of COVID-19 patients, the directors of several IITs appealed to the
students to trust the examination institution.
Ajit K Chaturvedi, director of IIT
Roorkee told, "The epidemic has already affected many students and
institutions because of this pandemic and we are not seeing the virus going
away soon." We should not allow this academic session to be 'zero' as it
will affect the future of many talented students. "He said that students
and their parents need to have faith in the system.
According to IIT Kharagpur director
Virendra Tiwari, "The exam has a global reputation in achieving excellence
and is considered one of the most difficult and prestigious examinations in the
world." The quick option for these exams will certainly not be satisfying
at the level of competition. "He said that the option could be used to
weaken the entire admission process of the IIT system which would prove
detrimental to IIT graduate education."
IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) member and IIT Ropar director Sarit Kumar Das said that the decision to conduct the exam in September was not taken in one night but all aspects were discussed. He said, "For some time now we were considering the possibility of conducting the examination. We considered the infrastructure and safety of students, such as how to comply with the social distance law and other rules. We discussed not only with each other but with health experts and most importantly the test takers. Das said that no one knew what the situation would be after three months and the 'zero academic session' would be bad for both students and institutions.
